History

1800’s – The first missionaries were Benedictine priests; Mass held at 11th and Greenup

1858 – Fr. Oswald Moosmueller comes from Covington for Mass on second Sunday of the month.There were 32 Catholic families,German and Irish

1860 – Holy Family Parish established by Bishop Carrell, small white church on 10th St. Fr. Herman Allen, the first pastor, was born in Holland and was buried under the old church

1867 - Work began on old church. Lot donated by Kentucky Iron Coal and Manufacturing Co.

1876 – Church completed except for the steeple which was added in 1960

1879 – Srs. of St. Francis come to start school strong in business and music. They started with 100 students

1880’s – Missions out in Rush, Louisa, Laurel Creek

1890 – Cornerstone laid for old school

1902 St. Lawrence Church in Greenup founded

1940 – Major renovation of church. Third floor added to old school

1945 – Athletic Association founded

1948 – Srs. of Divine Providence come to teach

1949 – Msgr. Carroll builds a new school and gym

1954Bellefonte Hospital is founded

1957 – Addition to the school

1960 – New front on old church, steeple finished

1975 – Major renovation of old church

1978 – December 8th fire destroyed the old church

1982 – On October 7 the present church building was dedicated, erected just 40 months after the fire destroyed the original church.

1982 to present time Holy Family Parish continues to serve the needs of Catholics in the area. Hundreds have been baptized, confirmed, exchanged wedding vows; many newly ordained priests have celebrated their first Mass here and people have come here to bury their dead. Hundreds have come to inquire about the faith and join our faith community.
